Eucharistic Celebration in grateful memory of Adolfo Nicolás, S.J.

The grain of wheat that falls to the ground and dies to produce fruit, is the parable of the life of Jesus, nailed to the cross and raised, as a sign of the love that opens the way from death to life anew. It is also the parable of the followers of Jesus, of those who, like Adolfo Nicolás, choose to “hate their life in this world” in order to become his companion, that is, to occupy the same place that Jesus occupied, the redeeming cross as the entry into life. Of those who choose to become another grain of wheat that falls to the ground, dies and bears much fruit.

Infectious humour, refreshing simplicity, clear insight and natural warmth have characterised Fr Adolfo Nicolás in many roles and responsibilities. Jesuits and collaborators across the world could relate to him as a leader certainly and easily as a friend. Somehow the roles of leadership to which he was called, which included Provincial of Japanese Province (1993 – 1999), Conference President (2004 – 2008) and later General (2008 – 2016), were a surprise to him. Yet he fulfilled each with a distinctive simplicity, grace and warmth.
